Junior Scholastic Federation

California Junior Scholastic Federation (CJSF)

WHAT IS CJSF?

The purpose of the California Junior Scholastic Federation (CJSF), a statewide organization of over 600 chapters, is to foster high standards of scholarship, service and citizenship on the part of students of California's public school, private and charter junior high and middle schools. The application link is below:

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

CJSF is open to all La Joya 7th and 8th grade students who meet the academic requirements.  7th graders are only eligible during the Spring semester, based on a 7th grade students FALL semester grades.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CJSF MEMBERSHIP?

CJSF prepares the student for CSF membership in high school.  Membership offers the opportunities to participate in activities which benefit the school, the community, and the student.

WHEN DO I APPLY?

Students must apply each semester.  Students must meet the grade requirements (see requirements below) and bring $1 in membership fees during the week of sign-ups.

WHAT ARE CJSF REQUIREMENTS EACH SEMESTER?

To be eligible, a student's grades must equate to 10 total points each semester.  Points are given based on a student's semester grades in ELA, History, Science, and Math ONLY.  The ELA grade is counted twice in the calculation.

  • For each semester grade that is 3.7 - 4.0, a student earns 3 points
  • For each semester grade that is 3.0 - 3.6, a student earns 1 point
  • For each semester grade that is 2.0 - 2.9, a student earns 0 points.

Regardless of total points, a 1.0 - 1.9 semester grade in any course makes you ineligible for CJSF membership.

Students get 1 extra point for any Pre-AP course. One point only – enrollment in more Pre-AP courses does not earn more points.

DO YOU ACCEPT LATE APPLICATIONS?

Unfortunately, no.  In the laws of the state organization of CJSF it specifically states that late applications may not be accepted.  Chapters that do so can lose their membership.  Turning applications in on time is part of being in CJSF.  Please plan ahead, stay informed, pay attention to the school broadcasts and don't forget!

HOW DO I BECOME AN HONOR GRADUATE OF CJSF?

Students must be a member of CJSF for at least three semesters to be eligible for Honor Graduate Status.

WHAT IF A STUDENT TRANSFERS FROM ANOTHER MIDDLE SCHOOL TO LA JOYA 7TH OR 8TH GRADE?

A student who transfers to La Joya from a school without a CJSF chapter and whose grades from the former school meet the requirements of La Joya's CJSF chapter will be eligible to apply for membership in which he/she would have been qualified. Students will have fifteen school days from the students first day of school at La Joya to apply for membership.  If applying for more than one semester of membership, students must fill out separate applications.

If a student transfers from another school that uses a non-traditional grading system, students should fill out the NON-TRADITIONAL GRADING membership form.
